Joseph Hockett was born in 1772 to Anthony Hockett and Mary Agnes Hockett, and had siblings Samuel Hockett, Agness Harvey, Jonathan Hockett, David Hockett, Moses Hockett, and Benjamin Hockett. Joseph Hockett died at age 70 years old in 1842.

In 1811, at the age of 39 years old, Joseph was alive when on November 7th, the Battle of Tippecanoe was fought. American troops led by William Henry Harrison - then Governor of the Indiana Territory, later the 9th President of the United States - defeated the Native American warriors. A confederacy of Native American tribes opposed U.S. expansion into Indian Territory. but Tecumseh was gone, recruiting troops, and there was no military leader on the Native American side. The battle lasted 2 hours.
