    He owned and operated Bennie's Country Club in Ridgway and also built Bennie's Bar in Ridgeway, which became known as The Wheel Bar. When he was 38 years old, he told the 1950 Federal census that he was a bartender at a tavern. Later, he farmed until his retirement in 1971.

    Bennie D Thomas was born to Josiah Thomas (1855 - 1938) and Mattie Anderson (1868 - 1942) on May 13, 1911 in Dodgeville, Iowa and he was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers: Lettie, Willie, Irene, Charlie, Everette, Curt, Ella and Alton, plus an infant sister. On his October 1940 World War II draft card, Bennie described himself as being five feet ten inches tall and as weighing 195 pounds. He had blue eyes, brown hair, and a "light" complexion. Bennie Thomas married Delma Forseth (1916 - 1961) in 1937 and she died in 1961. He then married Julie Mary Lehman (1918 - 2000) in 1963. He was survived by children Dennis, Lowell, Bruce, Bob, Lee, Dean and Cheryl. He was also survived by sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
