He lived in Hamlin County South Dakota for the first part of his life moving to Dallas, Texas in 1940. At the age of 21, Bernhardt Donald Kornmann was living in Dallas, Texas, and working for Braniff Airways when he registered for the draft on October 16, 1940. He was described as being 5'10" tall, weighing 175 pounds, with light complexion, blonde hair, and blue eyes. Bernhardt married Sibyl Carmen White Rand McIntire (1919–2011) in 1941. The couple had two children together, a daughter and a son, Bernhardt Donald Kornmann Jr (1943-2008). On October 12, 1944, Bernhardt Donald Kornmann enlisted in the United States Navy, likely due to the ongoing World War II. He was discharged on March 5, 1946.
