Bernhardt Donald Kornmann was born on January 23, 1919 in Thomas Hamlin, South Dakota, USA to parents Bruno Kornmann (1879-1946) and Ida Rodina Knutson (1880-1968). He had multiple siblings including Leonard Bruno, Beatrice Florence, Alice Viola, Helmar Adolph, Hazel Ida, Thelma Lena, Woodrow Conrad, and Lillian Miranda Kornmann. He lived in Hamlin County South Dakota for the first part of his life moving to Dallas, Texas in 1940. At the age of 21, Bernhardt Donald Kornmann was living in Dallas, Texas, and working for Braniff Airways when he registered for the draft on October 16, 1940. He was described as being 5'10" tall, weighing 175 pounds, with light complexion, blonde hair, and blue eyes. Bernhardt married Sibyl Carmen White Rand McIntire (1919–2011) in 1941. The couple had two children together, a daughter and a son, Bernhardt Donald Kornmann Jr (1943-2008). On October 12, 1944, Bernhardt Donald Kornmann enlisted in the United States Navy, likely due to the ongoing World War II. He was discharged on March 5, 1946.

Bernhardt Donald Kornmann Jr was born on December 31, 1943 in Dallas, Texas, USA to parents Bernhardt D. Kornmann Sr (1919-1994) and Sibyl Carmen White Rand McIntire (1919-2011). He grew up in Dallas and had a sister. Bernhardt attended Sunset High School in Dallas, Texas and graduated high school in 1962. He went on to attend East Texas University and North Texas State University. Bernhardt Kornmann Jr. served in the military during the 1960s. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 3, 1961, and served until his discharge on August 11, 1964. After a brief period as a civilian, Kornmann enlisted again, this time in the United States Coast Guard. He enlisted on January 17, 1966, with an enlistment branch of CG (Coast Guard). However, his time in the Coast Guard was very short-lived. He was discharged just 11 days later, on January 28, 1966.
