Bertie Lewis was born 18th June 1905 at “Iron Gate”, Golden Grove in the Parish of Llandilo Fawr, Carmarthenshire. He was the fourth of six children of John Thomas Lewis and Jemima (nee Davies) his wife. “Iron Gate” was a small holding of 16 acres or thereabouts forming a small part of the 11,000 acre Golden Grove Estate of The Earl of Cawdor. The Earl held other holdings within the counties of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire as well as his main estate based at Nairn Castle, Scotland. Bertie was educated at Golden Grove Primary School and Llandilo County Grammar School subsequently taking up employment with Central Garages Ltd., Automobile Engineers, Llandilo (Clerk and Chief Clerk 1920-1935); Prudential Assurance Co. (District Agent 1935-1937); C.K. Andrews Ltd., Automobile Sales and Engineers, Swansea (1937-1939) and Hills and Steele, Pontypridd Office (Bookkeeper and later Assistant Accountant from 1939). John Thomas Lewis as well as his father Rees Lewis were Master Carpenters within the employ of the Golden Grove Estate of Earl Cawdor with John Thomas also acting as day to day Architect for the Estate. In that capacity he designed and built “Iron Gate” with completion around 1894. Rees Lewis was responsible for the construction of the pews and other internal furniture in the church of St Michael, Golden Grove. In addition to a memorial stone in El Alia Cemetery, Algiers, Bertie is commemorated on the joint Parish WWII memorial located within the churchyard at Llangathen; on the family grave within grounds of St.Michaels Church, Golden Grove; a marble plaque on the inside wall of the church alongside the family pew, and on a brass memorial plaque within the reception area at the successor school to the former Llandilo County Grammar School.
