Belle & Ed McPhetridge ranch
A photo of Belle & Ed McPhetridge on their ranch. Aunt Belle was the first to marry and leave home. She married Edward Bruce Mc Phetridge (1858-1907) and they lived on this ranch. I don't know where it was located but imagine it was in Mt. Pleasant district. Their first daughter Eula is in the photo with their dog Dido. Uncle Ed worked in the Sutter County Recorders Office at one time. Mama & Aunt Lou stayed with them briefly in Yuba City before they went to work in Sacramento.

When I was a little girl in the 1950s that area was known for orchards of prunes and plums as well as dairy farming.

A photo of Aunt Belle & daughters in Reno. This is Aunt Belle, Lola Belle standing, and Eula taken in Reno. They moved after 1907 when Ed Mc Phetridge died. Aunt Belle worked as a housekeeper. When I was 18, I drove our car up to Reno with Mama, Verna, and Ceta to visit for a few days.

Belle Lewis of Sheridan
This is Aunt Belle at the age of 19. It was taken in Nevada City, California. She was the first to marry in the family but didn't live far away in Sheridan. As the eldest, she kept up the family album and kept in touch with the family in Iowa.

Mary Belle Lewis
The firstborn in the family of Samuel Jackson Lewis & Martha Love Barker was my Aunt Belle. She was named for her Aunt Mary Barker French. The hoop in this picture were very common toys in the old days. A peddler came through Lake Tahoe when my son Pieter was a boy & I bought one for him and he grew up running along spinning the iron hoop.

Love her dress, her shoes, the hoop - and the look on her face! What an expressive little doll.

The 3 Lewis Sisters in Sheridan
My mother, Martha Lewis, Aunt Belle Lewis, and Aunt Lou Lewis. I think this was probably taken about the time Aunt Belle was getting married and left the ranch. Their mother had died in 1884 which left Mama and Aunt Lou alone on the ranch with their father. It was a hard childhood and Mama didn't like to talk about it.
