When I was a little girl in the 1950s that area was known for orchards of prunes and plums as well as dairy farming.

AncientFaces , I grew up there as well. During the depressio, my mom and her siblings picket ‘cots to earn a little money. Hard times but there was always love. The house my dad built in 1950 is now gone. Torn down and replaced with an ugly McMansion. Palo Alto is not the same lovely town where I grew up.

I just read the story. It sounds like this may have been closer to Sacramento, rather than Santa Clara County. I still love the mention of the Valley of Hearts Delight. Reminds me of the good old days.

Anna Gardner Oh yes - the pic was north of Sacramento. Just meant that it looked similar to the Valley in the 50s! Not Palo Alto but down around San Jose. :0
