Catherine Mcleod (Murchison) Buchanan of Kburra Australia was born in 1859 in VIC to Malcolm Murchison and Flora Mckay Finlayson. She had siblings Annie (Murchison) Gard, Christina Ann (Murchison) Clarke, and Flora Nicholson (Murchison) Finlayson. She married Colin Campbell Buchanan, and had children Flora Buchanan Hogan, Margaret Campbell Buchanan, Euphemia Buchannan, Catherine Buchanan Lancaster, James Malcolm Buchanan, William Alexander Buchanan, and Emily Buchanan. Catherine Buchanan died at age 72 years old on May 2, 1932 at S Gippsland Hwy, in Korumburra.

In 1859, in the year that Catherine Mcleod (Murchison) Buchanan was born, on February 27th, US Congressman Daniel Sickles shot and killed Philip Barton Key - a US. District Attorney and son of Francis Scott Key, writer of the national anthem, for having an affair with his wife. Sickles claimed temporary insanity - the first to do so - and was acquitted.
