In 1870 Charles and Jennie Carter left their home in Iowa, going by train to Kelton, Utah, where they joined an emigrant train of twenty wagons, and came to Idaho. They homesteaded a farm on sage brush land six miles north of where Nampa, Idaho now stands just south of the Boise River. They built a fort to defend against an Indian uprising in 1878.

The couple later moved to Boise and, in 1907 at age of 62, Charles Carter bought a lot in Old Nampa for $460 and built a home for he and his wife. In addition to a cozy home, he owned Carter’s Corral at the corner of Front Street and 11th Ave. and the White Line Transfer Barn where he boarded, fed, bought and sold horses. He was also a member of the Pioneer Society and a former member of the Caldwell School Board. Jennie Carter was noted for her singing and mentioned in several society page articles.

The Carters celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in their Nampa home in 1915. They lived in the house for 21 years and died within six months of each other in 1928.

Since then the house has changed hands several times over the years but always managed to retain its original Queen Anne Folk Victorian character both inside and out. Outside the home has original lap board siding and fish scale shingles. The interior has original doors and hardware, hardwood floors, large windows with 6” wide moldings and a 5’ wide paneled pocket door separating the two parlors.
Recently an application for the National Register of Historic Places was submitted for consideration. If approved, the home will be listed based on the fact that it retains its original unaltered Queen Anne architecture. It will be named the Charles E. and Jennie Carter Home built in 1907. I think the plaque will look good just to the left of the front door, don’t you?
