Charles Thomas Calaby 1857 - 1928

Charles Thomas Calaby of Creswick, VIC Australia was born in 1857 in Avoca, Pyrenees Shire County to Margaret Jane Johnstone and Henry Calaby. He had siblings Henry William Calaby, Phoebe Margaret Calaby, Isaac Calaby, Margaret Sarah (Calaby) Shiell, Florence Grace Calaby, William Calaby, James Calaby, Sarah Calaby, Frederick Walter Calaby, and Christopher Alfred Calaby. He married Louisa Caroline Passow in 1882, and had children Bertram Charles Calaby, Eva Louisa (Calaby) Jupp, Henry Frederick Calaby, Sydney Evelyn Calaby, Elsie Pearl Calaby, and Stanley Theodore Calaby. Charles Calaby died at age 70 years old on March 1, 1928 in Creswick.

In 1857, in the year that Charles Thomas Calaby was born, on March 2nd, the largest slave auction in US history was begun. Called "The Weeping Time", the auction lasted 2 days. Slave owner Pierce M. Butler - who had inherited the slaves 20 years before but was now deeply in debt - sold 436 men, women, children, and infants, all of whom were kept in stalls at a racetrack in Savannah, Georgia. The people were held for weeks before the auction in the horse stalls.
