Frederick Walter Calaby of Allendale, Hepburn Shire County, VIC Australia was born in 1862 in Avoca, Pyrenees Shire County to Margaret Jane Johnstone and Henry Calaby. He had siblings Henry William Calaby, Phoebe Margaret Calaby, Isaac Calaby, Margaret Sarah (Calaby) Shiell, Florence Grace Calaby, William Calaby, James Calaby, Sarah Calaby, Charles Thomas Calaby, and Christopher Alfred Calaby. He married Annie Sophia (Kerr) Calaby in 1887, and had children Cecil Meredith Calaby, Sidney Henry Calaby, Ernest Calaby, Jessie Sophia Calaby, Arthur Vivian Calaby, Frederick Walter Calaby, Charles Alan Calaby, and Leonard William Calaby. Frederick Calaby died at age 57 years old on August 12, 1920 in Allendale, Hepburn Shire County.

In 1862, in the year that Frederick Walter Calaby was born, British citizen Anna Leonowens, a widow, accepted a job in Siam (now Thailand) to teach the children and wives of the King of Siam - he had 39 wives and concubines and 82 children. Taking her son with her and sending her daughter to England for schooling, she taught in Siam for 6 years - until the King died.

In 1877, when he was only 15 years old, on March 2nd, the U.S. presidential election of 1876 was ended with the selection of Rutherford B. Hayes as the winner. Samuel J. Tilden had won the popular vote in November 1876 but 20 votes in the electoral college were in dispute. An informal agreement was made in which Hayes agreed to remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, ending Reconstruction in the South. So, on March 4th, Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President of the United States.
