Chester Bartlett's History: 1887 - 1964

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

I loved my Grandfather Chester. My mother, Edith Mae Bartlett Braden was his daughter. We lived in Kansas but used to make the drive to Indiana to visit. Mothers sisters, Chester's other daughters, lived in Muncie, Indiana. There was Betty the eldest, Sara Bartlett Richardson, and Bus (always called her Aunt Bus but she had another name). Grandpa lived with Bus. He would walk me around the yard and point out wild plants that could be used for healing. Plantain is one of the first ones I learned. He welded up a bicycle built for 2 and my cousin and I would ride it. He died when I was 10 years old. I remember the trip back to Indiana like it was yesterday. He was buried on my 10th birthday which is why I remember it so well. No one remembered my birthday except my cousin Jimmy Richardson. In Chester's room, he had all the letters I had ever written him (I started writing when I was 5, and they were very simple). I also sent him pictures, and he had all of those. My grandfather Chester was very interested in herbal medicine and used to make all his own cures and exiliars. When he passed, his many books were given to my Aunt Sara who was a nurse, but I ended up being the one who shared his passion. He was kind and gentle. He was very smart. He could fix anything. His repair shop felt like a magical place. It was not a far walk from my Aunt Bus' home where he lived. Mom said Chester was married numerous times. His first wife died of blood poisoning 2 years before the invention of penicillian. He was very tall, wore glasses and had black hair. My own mother had black hair. All the Bartlett's I knew had a very prominent, high, thin nose.
