VANISHED: Dina Michele Shoemake
Last updated July 22, 2022 at 2:54 p.m. CDT

HOUSTON COUNTY, Texas (KETK) Ms. Dina Michele Shoemake has been missing since 2000. And her case took a major turn 18 years after her disappearance.

She went missing from Latexo at the age of 32. Currently, she would be 52. Ms. Shoemake is white, 5’2” to 5’5”, and weighs about 130 to 140 pounds. Dina was last seen by her then-boyfriend, and last seen on January 29, 2000 in Latexo getting into a dark green 1990’s model Chevy truck, extended cab.

Almost two decades later, in May of 2018, Curtis Allen Shoemake, the 60-year-old ex-husband of Dina Shoemake, was booked into the Houston County Jail on the charge of first-degree murder. According to The Messenger, a local newspaper, Curtis had been a suspect since the case’s early days.

While the case continues to work its way through the judicial system, an anonymous tip as to the location of Dina Shoemake’s body was received in February 2019. Houston County Sheriff Darrell Bobbitt has expressed hope the person who left the tip will come forward with more information on the case. Other tips may be made anonymously or in person at 700 S. Fourth Street in Crockett.

Distinguishing characteristics, birthmarks, tattoos : Caucasian female. Brown hair, green eyes. Dina has a tattoo on her right leg, depicting a unicorn standing on a cloud with a rainbow over the top. Her nickname is Sissy. Her upper and lower teeth are crooked and her ears are double-pierced.

Information on the case from local sources, may or may not be correct : Dina was last seen in Latexo, Texas on January 10, 2000. She went to the home of her ex-husband, Curtis Allen Shoemake, to visit their two children. A photo of him is posted with this case summary.

Curtis said Dina left with an unknown individual in a dark green 1990s model Chevrolet extended cab truck with Texas license plates, leaving her own vehicle behind at Curtis's house. She has never been heard from again. Her live-in boyfriend reported her missing on January 13.

Investigators never believed Dina left of her own accord; prior to her disappearance, she had planted flowers in her yard, which is uncharacteristic of someone who planned to walk away from her life. After she went missing, several jewelry items which Dina wore daily, as well as jewelry she'd borrowed from others, were found at a local pawnshop. Authorities determined they'd been pawned by Curtis.

In May 2018, Curtis was charged with first-degree murder in her case. Authorities stated he'd been a suspect since early in the investigation. Dina had been afraid of him and had called 911 several times in response to his behavior.
Before Dina arrived at his house to see the children on the day of her disappearance, Curtis took them to a neighbor's house, telling the neighbor he'd pick them up later. When authorities went to his residence after Dina's disappearance, there was a strong odor of bleach, although a black-light test for blood spatter was negative. Curtis also pawned some of Dina's jewelry after her disappearance.

Curtis has been released on bail and is awaiting trial for the presumed murder. Foul play is suspected in Dina's case due to the circumstances involved.

Curtis Shoemake, 60, was arrested Tuesday for the murder of his ex-wife, Dina Shoemake, after an indictment by a Houston County Grand Jury. The arrest came 18 years after Dina Shoemake was murdered.

“It's been a long time coming,” said Houston County Sheriff Darrell Bobbitt. “I'm proud of my department and all their hard work and persistence on this case.”

Dina Shoemake has been classified as a missing person for more than 18 years. Curtis Shoemake was the last person to see her alive.

“Initially, it’s almost impossible to take a case like this to the grand jury, when all you have is evidence and you don't have a body,” Sheriff Bobbitt said. “We recently worked with investigators and attorneys from the television show Cold Justice and re-established this case, re-interviewing the 50 or 60 witnesses involved. We were able to present to the grand jury and get an indictment.”

Curtis was booked into the Houston County Jail, with bond set at $100,000.

The case has puzzled local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies for nearly two decades.

Random tips and rumors led nowhere, leaving all of East Texas, especially her family, without answers.

Then 32, Dina Shoemake vanished from her hometown, Latexo, 18 years ago, on Jan. 19, 2000.

From the start, Curtis Shoemake was considered the main person of interest in Dina’s disappearance.

According to investigators, Dina Shoemake had reportedly gone to her ex-husband’s house to help set up a Nintendo gaming system she had purchased for her children for Christmas.

Dina’s boyfriend, whom she lived with, reported her missing when she did not return home after several hours.

Houston County Sheriff’s deputies went to the home of Curtis Shoemake to investigate. He told investigators that his ex-wife had left with someone in a dark green, 1990s, extended-cab Chevrolet truck with Texas license plates. He said she had left her own vehicle at his home.

When officers entered Shoemake's house, they noted a strong smell of bleach.

No signs of Dina Shoemake were found in the home.A black-light check for blood splatter was negative.

Before Dina Shoemake arrived, Curtis Shoemake reportedly took his children to a neighbor’s house, telling the neighbor he would return for them later.

With two children – a boy and a girl – Dina Shoemake had planted flowers around her home, leading officers to believe she was invested in the property and did not plan to leave.

Prior to her disappearance, Dina Shoemake made several 9-1-1 calls regarding Curtis and his fear-provoking behavior.

After she disappeared, several pieces of her jewelry turned up in a local pawnshop.

The recorded name on the tickets of the person who sold the jewelry was Curtis Shoemake.

Shoemake did time for the possession charge, even though he was offered several plea deals, including taking a lie detector test about Dina Shoemake's disappearance. He reportedly refused.

After Dina Shoemake disappeared, the Texas Rangers, the Department of Public Safety's Special Crime Scene Team, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation started to work on the case.

In 2005, working off a promising tip, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office dug up part of the foundation to a building on property known as “Lost Lake Lodge,” CR 1614 in Grapeland. Investigators used an x-ray machine to search the property, but found nothing.

In 2005, Houston County Crime stoppers spotlighted the case and offered an unprecedented $5,000 reward. Nothing came of it.

“I was not here when Dina Shoemake went missing, but most of the staff was,” said Houston County Chief Deputy Gary Shearer. “It was more personal to them to finally make an arrest in this case. Now we wait and see what happens in court.”

The episode of Cold Justice, featuring this case, is scheduled to air in fall.

Curtis Shoemake is to be considered innocent until proven guilty.
