In Hollywood - Cynthia's adoption
Hollywood, June 22 (INS) - The Basil Rathbones have adopted a baby girl. "You cannot imagine how happy we are to have a little mite in the house again, Rathbone said today. "I can hardly wait till I get home from work to see her," Their own baby died eleven years ago. The little newcomer, 11 weeks old, has been named Barbara Cynthia. Basil and Mrs. Rathbone - she's the former Ouida Bergere, top flight scenario writer - selected Barbara because it's the name of both their mothers. They picked Cynthia because they think it a pretty name.
Barbara is due for a 6,500-mile round-trip September for her christening. The sacrament will be administered at the home of Major and Mrs. Ral Par, intimates of the Rathbones for many years, at their famous estate at Stevenson, just outside of Baltimore. To Basil, Barbara looks very, very little indeed for his 23-year-old son by a previous marriage, Rodion, is a strapping six-footer who is staging his own screen career under the name of John Rodion so as not to trade on his famous father's name. The Rathbones hoped to take Barbara east earlier but he had another picture to make after he completes "The Adventures of Sherlock Homes" for 20th Century-Fox.
Incidentally, some of the disguises Rathbone wears as the famous detective of fiction are truly amazing. Your reporter, dropping on the set to pay him a visit, failed to recognize him. It's not surprising because Novell Miles, who made him up in "The Hound of the Baskervilles" failed to recognize him too.
