David Sutherland 1836 - 1918

David Sutherland was born in 1836 to John Sutherland and Margaret Bran. He was in a relationship with Euphemia (Warner) Sutherland, and had children Margaret Sutherland, Elizabeth Sutherland, Catherine Jane Sutherland, Agnes (Sutherland) Drysdale, and Edgar Sutherland. David Sutherland died at age 81 years old on August 10, 1918 in Malvern, Stonnington City County, VIC Australia, and was buried at St Kilda Cemetery Dandenong Rd, in St Kilda East, Port Phillip City County.

In 1836, in the year that David Sutherland was born, on February 23rd, the Battle of the Alamo began. A group of American settlers were surrounded by the Mexican Army, led by Santa Anna, at the Alamo. The battle lasted until March 6th - all of the settler army was killed. Historians estimate that 400–600 in the Mexican Army were killed.

In 1844, he was merely 8 years old when on July 3rd, the last known pair of great auk were killed in Iceland. A flightless bird, the average auk was about 33 inches tall and weighed about 11 pounds with a black back and white belly. They were most often found along the coast of Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Canada Great Britain, Ireland - and sometimes as far south as Spain.
