Detlef Petersen's History: 1853 - 1934

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Detlef Petersen was down from Oak Creek Decoration Day. Detlef is one of the old-timers, coming here way back in 1878—33 years ago, when he was a young man, single, but refused to stay that way; was here when Sherman county was in swaddling clothes, before our pre-historic court house was built; when they had Kearney for a trading point; used coffee mills to grind their food to eat and is a living encyclopedia of early pioneer history of Sherman county. He is still living on his land taken up when he came here, is comfortably surrounded with this world's goods, has raised a fine family of children, and is jolly, happy and contented. What more or better could one ask? Could Detlef be prevailed upon to give his knowledge of the early history of Sherman county. It would prove mighty interesting reading. Why don’t he or others do so. The Loup City northwestern, June 01, 1911, Page 5

After which he lived five years making a total 55 years of married life. He had been troubled for years with gall stones and had been having the Shingles from which he had been recovering, when a bad attack of gall stone trouble came on him again, from which he could not survive. He was converted to the Christian faith at an early age, enjoying his Bible readings, having read the entire Bible again the last year of his life. The funeral was held June 21 at 2 o'clock at the Cortner Funeral chapel in Redlands, with Rev. H. C. Slater of The First Methodist church conducting the service. The chapel was filled with beautiful floral offerings. Two hymns, "Nearer My God to Thee", and "God Be With You Til We Meet Again" were sung at the beginning and end of the service. He was laid away under an Acacia tree in the Masonic section of The Montecito Memorial Park, five miles west of Redlands, a beautiful spot in the foothills over looking the San Bernardino valley. -Sherman County Times The Ord Quiz, Ord, Nebraska.
