I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.

Louisa F Schultz of Lyons, Clinton County, Iowa USA was born in October 1885 in Jackson County, and died at age 16 years old on September 26, 1902 in Lyons, Clinton County.

All of the records of their initial settlement in eastern Iowa being only traditional stories, I hired Margaret Foster of 4401 S.W. 5th, Des Moines, Iowa 50315, to research any records that might be available at the state's records in Des Moines. Her records listed elsewhere, here, made it appear that they had come to eastern Iowa in 1852, instead of 1851. My attempts to find any record in 1851 had proved futile, so at the recommendation of Mrs. Foster, I hired Dottie Millman of 8613 Stockton Parkway, Alexandria, Virginia 22308, to search the ship passenger lists for the year 1852. From the information that I gave her, she assumed that they left from the port of Hamburg, Germany. She then checked the Manuscripts of the Library of Congress passengers leaving that port in 1852 and found that Joh Holst and Hans Holst were listed on the ship Leibnitz under Captain Meyer (Meier) leaving the port of Hamburg on the 16th day of March 1852 for New Orleans with 108 passengers. With that information, she then went to the National Archives and checked the quarterly Abstract lists of ships coming into that port, finding them arriving there on the 25th day of May 1852. Mrs. Foster found another girl by the name Staack in Clinton County, Cecelia, who married Hans Petersen on December 14th, 1855, and died November 1856. Magdalena Staack married Peter Petersen on August 13th, 1852, the same day that Johann and Christina were married by Judge Spurr in Bellevue, Jackson County, Iowa. Johann and Christine Holst had emigrated from Schleswig Holstein, then a province of Denmark in 1852, but a few years later claimed by Germany in the Prussian War. This war was the reason for the emigrants coming to America among them Johann Holst and some brothers and sisters and Christine Staack, whom Johann married after they reached America, from New Orleans where the ship docked, the party came up the Mississippi River to Sabula, Iowa. From Sabula the Holst family moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where they owned a hotel.
