Dorothea was a best selling authoress for her book, "Something To Live By". She wrote the book after losing her young daughter, Rosemary, to leukemia. Later, she memorialized her home to honor her daughter and then set up an estate to maintain the home and refurbish a portion of it to serve as dorm rooms to house female college students who are pursuing careers in nursing, teaching, and business administration.

Dorothea was born in Glencoe, McLeod County, Minnesota. She lived in Glencoe until her graduation from the University of Minnesota in 1919.
-
Dorothea was a very spiritual person. Her second book, "SCRIPTURE TO LIVE BY" contained quotations that contributed the most to her understanding of the great Power that made and controls the universe and her relationship to that power. Dorothea said, "It would be most absurd if I were to close my eyes to the nearness of the personal guidance of that Power that has led me all my life, and has compelled me to acts that have proved later to have a perfect interconnection and a perfect goal -- even the guiding of this book. Unashamed, I confess a greater hand than mine is responsible for the sequence of the thoughts in both "Something to Live By" and also "SCRIPTURE TO LIVE BY."

Did you know?
In 1898, in the year that Dorothea (Simons) Kopplin was born, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.
Did you know?
In 1905, at the age of only 7 years old, Dorothea was alive when acclaimed dancer Isadora Duncan established the first school of modern dance in Berlin Germany. Isadora Duncan, born in San Francisco California, dedicated herself to the creation of beauty - through dance. Her focus on the movement of the human body rather than formal kinds of dance helped to give rise to the modern dance movement.

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth.
So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her.

My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.

Real Life Newsies Were Very Different Than What We Saw In The Disney Film
These aren't the boys who delivered a newspaper to your home, nor are they singing and dancing like in the 1990s Disney film 'Newsies'. These are the children, usually age 9 - 15 although sometimes younger, who bought papers on their own dime and sold them on the city streets to try and make a living. These children became the face of child exploitation during the 19th and 20th centuries. How would you feel if your son had to live the life you see on these pages?
