  • Introduction

Drita Shehu was my older sister and the second daughter of Tefik and Orsalie Shehu. She died eighteen months before l was born. On a extremely hot January day 1957, she developed respiratory complications that proved fatal. My older sister has a clear recollection of Drita. When my first child was born in October 1983 in Brisbane, l named her in honour of the sister l had never met. In Albanian, `Drita' means `sunlight'. There is a plaque commemorating her in Fawkner Cemetery that l erected in late 1999.
