Introduction

Orsalia Shehu (nee Defigou) was my mother. She was born in 1933 to George and Maria Defigou. She was a sister to Danaj, Eftalia and Panayiotis. She left Greece in 1954 and married Tefik Shehu in Melbourne. They had three children - Fatime (b.1955), Drita (b.1956) and Bardhyl (b.1958). She was also grandmother to Cassandra (b.1976), Lynda (b.1978), Michael (b.1980), Drita (b.1980), Tefik (b.1985) and Teuta (b.1990). She and Tefik moved to Carinish Road in Clayton in 1965 and remained there until December 1977 when they moved to Sunnybank Hills in Brisbane. Her husband passed away in December 1982 and she lived with her son Bardhyl and his wife Aferdita at 9 Terowi Street. She passed away in January 2010. My mother was a vivacious person who made friends very easily - and kept them. She is buried next to her husband in Mt Gravatt cemetery. She spent her last few weeks at the house of her eldest daughter who cared for her tirelessly. Everyone believes their mother was one of a kind, but Orsalia Shehu really was the brightest star in the night sky.
