  • Introduction

Bruce Jackson posted a condolence Friday, October 7, 2011 Mrs. Schless was my French teacher in Lower School. Although that was many, many years ago, and despite the fact that I knew her for just a couple of years when I was still quite young, I remember her most fondly. She was a caring and thoughtful person, and she was a superb teacher. Thanks for the life of Mrs. Schless! My thoughts and prayers go out to the Schless children. Kricket posted a condolence Tuesday, June 28, 2011 Loving memories of a Great Lady*... I send gratitude for the fleeting acquaintance I was privileged to have enjoyed, and for continuing friendship with Edmee's family*... May her dear departed spirit be at Peace*...

Obituary of Edmee Schless EDMEE de M. SCHLESS Anne Louise Edmee Boula de Mareuil Schless, a New Canaan resident since 1973, died at her home on Tuesday, January 5, after a brief illness. Born on December 21, 1921, in Paris, she was the second of nine children of the Count and Countess Antoine Joseph Boula de Mareuil. A graduate of the Sorbonne, she was working as a journalist and translator for Time-Life when she met Howard Schless shortly after World War II. They married in 1951 and moved to the United States, settling in Riverdale, New York, when Professor Schless began his career as a mediaevalist at Columbia University. Edmee Schless, an expert in European history, taught French and Classical languages in private schools from 1962 until she retired in 1994 as the head of the language department at St. Luke’s School in New Canaan. After her husband’s death in 1997, she divided her time between New Canaan and her house in the southwest of France. Her friends and family will remember this remarkable lady for her dauntless sense of adventure, her dry humor, her avid intellect, and her love of life. Her personal history was interwoven with the history of her forbears dating back to the foundations of Gaul. Fascinating accounts of her childhood in a bygone culture and an adolescence whose family fought with the French Resistance were mingled with equally vivid stories of her relatives’ roles in the French Revolution, the feudal life of the Middle ages, the establishment of the Napoleonic code, the Albigensian uprisings, and innumerable details, artifacts, and tales in which the lines between personal and national history were indistinct. Her ties to France and to her relatives in France never weakened, but her bond to New Canaan became just as powerful. She developed lasting and rewarding friendships to a great number of its residents, often participating in gatherings which she found intellectually stimulating and personally valuable. Her greatest gratification came from her close bonds with her children and grandchildren. Throughout her life, she remained physically and socially active, leaving behind a family and many friends whose lives were uniquely enriched by her presence. Edmee Schless is survived by two daughters, Ghilaine Marino of Concord, MA, and Nicole Schless of Madison, CT, and her son, Eric Schless of Old Greenwich, CT, as well as six grandchildren. She also has a large number of surviving relatives in France, including three sisters and one brother. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 16, at the Benedictine Grange, Dorethy Road, West Redding, CT. For the convenience of those wishing to attend, a group will leave from the Roger Sherman Inn an 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted by the New Canaan Library in the name of Edmee deM. Schless for a special collection of French literature and history.
  • Professional Career

Edmee taught French and Latin at the Nightingale Bamford School in New York, where, to a generation of young women, she was simply known as "Madame". After moving to New Canaan in 1974, Edmee became head of the languages department at St. Luke's School, from which she retired. Throughout her life, Edmee was a passionate student of European history, particularly French history from the Crusades to the Revolution. She led numerous French-language book groups, participated in forums for peace at the UN and was an avid bridge player. She traveled extensively and regularly alternated between her houses in New Canaan and Lectoure, a town in the southwest of France close to her family's ancestral home.

SCHLESS--Edmee de M. On January 5, 2010, Edmee de M. Schless of New Canaan, CT, and Lectoure, France, died peacefully of natural causes. Born December 28, 1921, in Paris, as the third of nine children of the Count and Countess Boula de Mareuil, she led a privileged life until the onset of World War II. Her older brother, Camille, was an organizer of the Normandy resistance who was captured early in the War. His notoriety forced the rest of the family to disperse and added to the struggle and hardship that Edmee experienced during the War as she raised her two youngest siblings. After the war, Edmee completed her studies at the Sorbonne and took a job with Life Magazine. At a Fourth of July party at the American embassy in Paris in 1950, she met Howard Schless, a Philadelphia Quaker, Harvard graduate and, decorated veteran of the Tenth Mountain Division. They were married in 1951 and eventually moved to New York, where he was on the faculty of Columbia University. They were married until his death in 1997. Edmee taught French and Latin at the Nightingale Bamford School in New York, where, to a generation of young women, she was simply known as "Madame". After moving to New Canaan in 1974, Edmee became head of the languages department at St. Luke's School, from which she retired. Madame Schless was a teacher with an extraordinary range of knowledge, and I’m forever grateful that I had the privilege of learning from her for two years in high school. I still have great admiration for her ability to come up with detailed, contemporary references to buttress an argument from just about any historical period. At the end of my senior year, she gave me the French Award, and to present it she wrote a very clever limerick, and then made it work perfectly in both English and French. I will always remember her as an ideal teacher: the kind whose example sets the highest standard, and who inspires us to do our very best.
