Elizabeth Overson of Footscray Australia was born in 1868 to William Holdsworth and Hannah Hird Holdsworth. She had siblings Elizabeth Holdsworth, Eliza Anna Holdsworth, Michael Holdsworth, James Holdsworth, Milley Thorley, Joseph Holdsworth, and Margaret Holdsworth Jervies. Elizabeth Overson died at age 81 years old in 1949 in Footscray.

In 1868, in the year that Elizabeth Overson was born, on July 9th, The Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified. The Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed African Americans full citizenship and equal protection under the law. It also gave all persons in the United States due process of law. The former Confederate states hotly contested the amendment but were forced to go along so that they could regain representation in Congress

In 1900, when she was 32 years old, the German physicist Max Planck formulated an energy theory, postulating the existence of "quanta," which lays the groundwork for the quantum theory of modern physics. In December, he introduced a paper on the Planck postulate which stated that E=hv - the energy of a photon is proportional to its frequency times a constant. Planck won a Nobel Prize in 1918 for his work in theoretical Physics.
