James Holdsworth of Mortlake Australia was born in 1857 to William Holdsworth and Hannah Hird Holdsworth. He had siblings Elizabeth Holdsworth, Eliza Anna Holdsworth, Michael Holdsworth, Milley Thorley, Joseph Holdsworth, Elizabeth Overson, and Margaret Holdsworth Jervies. James Holdsworth died at age 79 years old in 1936 in Mortlake.

In 1857, in the year that James Holdsworth was born, on March 2nd, the largest slave auction in US history was begun. Called "The Weeping Time", the auction lasted 2 days. Slave owner Pierce M. Butler - who had inherited the slaves 20 years before but was now deeply in debt - sold 436 men, women, children, and infants, all of whom were kept in stalls at a racetrack in Savannah, Georgia. The people were held for weeks before the auction in the horse stalls.

In 1862, at the age of just 5 years old, James was alive when on August 17th, the Dakota War of 1862 began in Minnesota. Four Lakota Sioux - while hunting - killed five settlers near the Minnesota River. That evening, elders of the tribe decided to attack more settlements with the goal of driving out those who had settled the area. By the end of the year, 1000 Lakota had been jailed.
