Elsie May (Whitby) Rowland 1910 - 1991

Elsie May (Whitby) Rowland was born in 1910 to Alfred George Whitby and Alice May Whitby, and had a brother Stanley George Whitby. She married Monty Collett Wylie in 1935, and they were married until Monty's death on January 17, 1943. They had a child Douglas George Wylie. She also married Herbert Leonard Rowland in 1944, and they were married until death separated them. Elsie Rowland died at age 80 years old on August 22, 1991 in Frankston, Frankston City County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, 600 Princes Hwy, in Springvale, Greater Dandenong City County.

In 1910, in the year that Elsie May (Whitby) Rowland was born, the Mexican revolution began. Dictator Porfirio Díaz had ruled for 35 years and was nationally unpopular. When elections were held in 1910 and a rigged election kept Diaz in office. The uprising began - and lasted for another 10 years.

In 1934, by the time she was 24 years old, on November 11th 1933, an extremely strong dust storm hit South Dakota, stripping topsoil. Other strong dust storms had occurred during 1933. Severe droughts continued to hit the Great Plains and the dust storms devastated agricultural production as well as people's' lives for several years. The Roosevelt administration and scientists eventually determined that farming practices had caused the conditions that led to the dust storms and the changes they implemented in farming stopped the Dust Bowl.
