In 1910, in the year that Elva Caroline Wilson was born, the Mexican revolution began. Dictator Porfirio DÃaz had ruled for 35 years and was nationally unpopular. When elections were held in 1910 and a rigged election kept Diaz in office. The uprising began - and lasted for another 10 years.

In 1921, hugely popular Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, silent film star, was arrested for rape and manslaughter after an actress died following a party at his house. He was acquitted after three trials and the jury wrote a formal letter apologizing for the charges, but his career never recovered. His films were at first banned - the ban was lifted after a year - and he was mostly ostracized by the community. He died at 46..

What We Thought the Future Would Be Like at Christmas 1953
In 1953, the year 2000 seemed so far away - almost half a century in the future - and unimaginable. We thought that technology at the turn of the century would bring cars that drove themselves, computers that you could hold, men would live on the moon, and we would be watching color televisions. We dreamed of these great technologies while fearing that nuclear war would break out, that aliens would invade, or that machines would take over the world. After all, it was only 8 years after the end of World War 2, and while we dreamed about big accomplishments we were also fearing our demise.
