Emma Josephine (Scarlett) Berry was born in 1887 in Atchison, Atchison County, Kansas United States to Edward Milburn Scarlett and Emma Josephine Cumley, and had siblings Elbert Milburn Scarlett, Edward Cumley Scarlett, Ellsworth Leondas Scarlett, Effie Scarlett, Elmer Scarlett, Estella Scarlett, Edna Grace Scarlett, Gertrude Ellen Scarlett, and Esther Irene Scarlett. Emma Berry married Frank Berry, and died at age 55 years old in 1942.

In 1887, in the year that Emma Josephine Scarlett was born, on January 28th, the largest recorded snowflakes fell in a snowstorm in Fort Keogh, Montana. They were supposed to have been 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick. A rancher in the area said that they were “larger than milk pans”. A Wild West tall tale? Not according to the Guinness World Records book.

In 1893, Emma was only 6 years old when a songbook, called Song Stories for the Kindergarten, was published by sisters Patty and Mildred Hill. One of the songs included in the book was "Good Morning to All" - later the lyrics were changed and it became "Happy Birthday to You".
