Ellsworth Leondas Scarlett was born on December 4, 1876 in New Market, Taylor County, Iowa United States to Edward Milburn Scarlett and Emma Josephine Cumley, and had siblings Elbert Milburn Scarlett, Edward Cumley Scarlett, Effie Scarlett, Elmer Scarlett, Estella Scarlett, Emma Josephine Scarlett, Edna Grace Scarlett, Gertrude Ellen Scarlett, and Esther Irene Scarlett. He was in a relationship with Helena Alfreda Lassen, and had children Elva Helen Scarlett, Harold Ellsworth Scarlett, Alma Gertrude Scarlett, Homer Fredrick Scarlett, Hazel Louise Scarlett, and Marie Anna Scarlett. Ellsworth Scarlett died at age 68 years old on February 8, 1945 in Valley Falls, Jefferson County, KS.

In 1876, in the year that Ellsworth Leondas Scarlett was born, on February 14th, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone. So did Elisha Gray. A month later, on March 7th, Bell was granted the patent and on the 10th, he made his first successful telephone call - in which he said: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."

In 1882, at the age of merely 6 years old, Ellsworth was alive when on January 5th, writer and lawyer Charles J. Guiteau was found guilty of the assassination of President Garfield. Guiteau was "offended" because his job applications had been rejected by Garfield's government. He was sentenced to death -although his lawyer plead insanity - and hanged five months later, on June 30th.
