He had siblings Norman Winter Scott, Nellie Scott, and Sydney Hewett Scott. He married Gwendoline Lenore Virtue in 1906, and had children Isabel Lenore Scott, Laura Gwen Scott, and Ernest Dallas Scott. Ernest Scott died at age 88 years old in 1963 at Malvern Victoria, Australia in Malvern.

In 1875, in the year that Ernest William Scott was born, on March 1st, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act. The Act prohibited racial discrimination in both public accommodations and jury duty. Opposed by the public, the "public accommodations" sections of the Act were overturned by the Supreme Court eight years later.

In 1906, he was 31 years old when English biochemist Frederick Hopkins concluded that vitamins are essential to the human body and that a lack of vitamins caused scurvy and rickets. Scurvy and rickets were both huge problems in sailors that were at sea for extended time and the addition of vitamin C, vitamin D, and calcium in their diets helped eradicate the problem.
