In 1829, in the year that Francis Mcglead was born, on July 23rd, in the United States, William Burt obtained the first patent for a kind of typewriter - an earlier one had been made in Italy in 1808. The typographer, as it was called, was a rectangular wooden box 12 inches wide, 12 inches high, and 18 inches long. It worked by depressing a rotating lever so that an inked letter made contact with the paper.

In 1839, Francis was merely 10 years old when on January 2nd, the first photo of the Moon was taken by Louis Daguerre, known as the "father of photography". The following June, he applied for and got a patent for his camera - to which France acquired the rights in exchange for a lifetime pension for Louis and his co-inventor's nephew. The camera was available to the public by September. It cost 400 francs (about $50 US then, almost $1270 today) and weighed 120 pounds.
