George Devenport 1802 - 1871

George Devenport was born in 1802. He married Anne (Giles) Devenport on February 14, 1846 at Holy Trinity Church, in Adelaide, South Australia Australia, and they were married until death separated them. He married Catherine Jane (Harris) Devenport, and they were married until death separated them. They had children George Napier Devenport and Sydney Augustus Devenport. George Devenport died at age 68 years old on May 6, 1871, and was buried at West Terrace Cemetery, 161 West Terrace, in Adelaide, City of Adelaide County, SA Australia.

In 1839, at the age of 37 years old, George was alive when in The Boston Morning Post, on March 23rd, the first recorded use of the word "OK" appeared. A columnist in the paper said this: "The "Chairman of the Committee on Charity Lecture Bells, is one of the deputation, and perhaps if he should return to Boston, via Providence, he of the Journal, and his train-band, would have his 'contribution box,' et ceteras, o.k.—all correct—and cause the corks to fly, like sparks, upward." While this is the first known time that OK appeared in print, where the word came from is still disputed.
