George Napier Devenport 1862 - 1945

George Napier Devenport was born on September 9, 1862 in Adelaide, South Australia to George Devenport and Catherine Jane (Harris) Devenport, and had a brother Sydney Augustus Devenport. He married Hearty Guditta (Carter) Devenport on September 9, 1886 in Albert Park, Port Phillip City County, Victoria Australia, and they were married until death separated them. He had children Charles Napier Devenport, Edith Fedora (Devenport) Hoath, Leslie George Devenport, and Victor Sturt Devenport. George Devenport died at age 82 years old on February 16, 1945 in Canterbury, Boroondara City County, VIC Australia.

  • Introduction

    The Western Grazier. Wilcannia. NSW. 1st September. 1944. MR. V. STURT DEVENPORT. Interested in Explorers Tracks. The only known direct descendants in Australia of any of Captain Charles Sturt's party who entered the Far West in the ill fated expedition of a century ago are Mr. George Napier Devenport and family. Sons of Mr. George Napier Devenport are Messrs. Victor Sturt, Charles Napier and Leslie George Devenport. A daughter is Mrs. J. T. Hoath ( Melbourne ), and Mr. Essington Lewis, Director General of Munitions Production in Australia. The Devenports are the sons and grandchildren of George Devenport, Sturt's loyal servant and endeared family friend. Mr. Lewis is the grandson of William Lewis, who was chosen by Sturt as the man who would manipulate the boat when the explorers arrived at the supposed inland sea in the centre of Australia beyond Innamincka.
