Sydney Augustus Devenport 1868 - 1942

Sydney Augustus Devenport was born in 1868 in Kent Town, The City of Norwood Payneham and St Peters County, SA Australia to George Devenport and Catherine Jane (Harris) Devenport, and had a brother George Napier Devenport. He married Ellen Blanche (Phillips) Devenport, and they were married until death separated them. He had children Cyril Devenport, Howard Vernon Devenport, Sydney Devenport, Doris Ross, and Sylvia (Devenport) Halford. Sydney Devenport died at age 73 years old on December 26, 1942 at Prince Henry's Hospital, in South Melbourne, Port Phillip City County, VIC.

The Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed African Americans full citizenship and equal protection under the law. It also gave all persons in the United States due process of law. The former Confederate states hotly contested the amendment but were forced to go along so that they could regain representation in Congress

In 1893, by the time he was 25 years old, a songbook, called Song Stories for the Kindergarten, was published by sisters Patty and Mildred Hill. One of the songs included in the book was "Good Morning to All" - later the lyrics were changed and it became "Happy Birthday to You".
