  • Obituary

George Young, 74, known to many in Westwood as the unofficial mayor, died in the early hours of Monday, April 3, in Chico. George had been ill for some time, but the town was still shocked by the news. He is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Vera; two children, Mike and Patricia; five grandchildren, April, Jenny, Rebecca, Michael Jr. and Neil; and one great-grandchild, David. Born in Summerfield, Kan., Nov. 29 1925, George moved to California in 1946, settling in Westwood and working as a logger with a side job at Phil's Place (where the old chimney stands on Highway 36). In 1948 he married Vera Schuldies of Westwood, and the couple celebrated their 50th anniversary in grand style. George started his first business in 1955 at the Wye when he opened a market. Then in 1957 he closed that one and opened another in town, Young's Market. In the past few years he was often seen sitting on the dog food up front talking to his customers. He loved fishing and snowmobiling when he could and was an avid sports fol-lower. Many a time he could be found catching a game on television at the back of the store. He was very active in his church, Our Lady of Snows in Westwood, and was known to all as a pillar of the community. George was a lifetime Rotary member and was honored late last year when they renamed their picnic grounds in Westwood to George Young Park. He was a classic car collector and was generous to a fault in their use during the Paul Bunyan parades. George was quite famous around town for helping people when they needed it and was often fondly called "the bank of George." He contributed to every cause that asked and some that didn't. The community will miss this very likable man. The Rosary is tonight, Wednesday, April 5, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Snows Catholic Church on Cedar Street with the Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, April 6, at 10 a.m. Feather River Bulletin (Quincy, California) Wednesday, April 05, 2000

I remember George Young.
I lived right down the road from George Young and his Family. I went to school at Fletcher Walker Elementary with his daughter Patricia. When Lost is Space came out in the mid 60s I would go over to the Young's house and watch it on their TV since we didn't have one. On Forth of July George would be in charge of the cooking at the community park and from what I could tell everyone loved and admired George. He was a good man.
