George was in the Civil War Unit Co. E. 38th VA Inf. He enlisted June 8, 1861, he was hospitalized multiple times during his military days due to illnesses.
On August 27, 1862, George was hit by enemy gunfire, he was wounded in action at Warrenton Springs near the Rappahannock River in Northern Virginia, requiring hospitalization. He was shot through the thigh receiving a compound fracture of the femur of his right leg. This wound never healed properly, this would later end his war service. Resulting in an honorable discharge on January 26, 1863. At the time of his discharge he was 40, and 5 ft 10 in tall, with blue eyes and gray hair.
