George Thomas Richardson 1824 - 1894

George Thomas Richardson was born on September 15, 1824 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia United States. He married Martha Jane (Riddle) on December 21, 1849 in Pittsylvania County, and they were married until Martha's death on July 11, 1857. They had children Mary Elizabeth (Richardson) Henderson and William Thomas Richardson. He would also marry Amanda Jane (Payne) Richardson on December 27, 1857 in Pittsylvania County, and they were married until George's death on December 17, 1894. They had children Daniel Thomas Richardson, Amanda Sarah Richardson, Eliza Ann (Richardson) Yeaman, Julia Ellen (Richardson) Adams, Beverly Carter Richardson, Lucy Rachael (Richardson) Aherron, Henry Lee Richardson, and Ruth Magdalene (Richardson) Ricketts.

  • Military Service

    George was in the Civil War Unit Co. E. 38th VA Inf. He enlisted June 8, 1861, he was hospitalized multiple times during his military days due to illnesses. On August 27, 1862, George was hit by enemy gunfire, he was wounded in action at Warrenton Springs near the Rappahannock River in Northern Virginia, requiring hospitalization. He was shot through the thigh receiving a compound fracture of the femur of his right leg. This wound never healed properly, this would later end his war service. Resulting in an honorable discharge on January 26, 1863. At the time of his discharge he was 40, and 5 ft 10 in tall, with blue eyes and gray hair.
