Gilbert "Bert" Edward Searle 1891 - 1932

Gilbert Searle was born in 1891 to Emily Ruth Searle ( Grant and Henry Edward Searle, and had siblings Emily Ivy Claydon ( Searle, Olive Bertha Secretan ( Searle, Arthur Henry Searle, and Annie Winifred Searle. He married Effie Violet Searle ( Saunders, and had children Robert Edward Searle and Marian Searle. Gilbert Searle died at age 40 years old on December 6, 1932, and was buried at Brighton Cemetery in Caulfield South, Glen Eira City County, VIC Australia.

    The Argus, Melbourne. 7th December 1932. CYCLIST KILLED. Gilbert Searle, aged 42 years, of Palermo street, South Yarra, was thrown to the roadway, and his skull was fractured. He was admitted to the Alfred Hospital, and died early this morning.

SEARLE.- On the 7th December ( result of accident ), Gilbert, husband of the late Effie Searle, loved father of Robert, and beloved son of Emily and the late Henry Searle, loved brother of Arthur, Winnie, Ivy ( Mrs. Claydon ), and Olive ( Mrs. Secretan ). At rest. The Age, Melbourne. 6th December 1933. IN MEMORIUM. SEARLE.- In sad and loving memory of my dear son and our dear brother, Bert, accidentally killed 6th December, 1932. One year has passed since that sad day, When our dear Bert was called away; The loss was great, the shock severe, We little thought his end was near, It is only those who have lost can tell, The sorrow of parting without farewell. Sadly missed. - By his loving mother, brother, Arthur ( N.S.W.), sisters, Winnie, Ivy ( Mrs. Claydon ), Olive ( Mrs. Secretan ), and son Bob. SEARLE.- In loving memory of my dear dad, accidentally killed 6th December, 1932; also my dear mother and baby sister, Marion, died 23rd September, 1921. Very sadly missed. - by their loving son, Bob.

In 1902, when he was just 11 years old, the first Rose Bowl game was played in Pasadena, California. Called the "Tournament East–West football game" at the time, the Michigan Wolverines (East) played the Stanford Indians (West) - the Wolverines won 49 - 0. (The Stanford captain requested an end to the game with 8 minutes remaining.) The Tournament of Roses Parade began in 1890 and the football game began as a way to boost tourism in the area.
