Harry Edgar Brereton of Golden Square, Greater Bendigo City County, VIC Australia was born in 1901 in Malmsbury to William Brereton and Elizabeth Ann (Hughes) Brereton. He had siblings Thomas Edward Brereton, Lottie Louisa (Brereton) Letts, Elizabeth Ann Brereton, William John Hughes Brereton, Beatrice Augusta Brereton, Amelia Sarah Brereton, George James Brereton, Gertrude Elizabeth Brereton, John Forrest Brereton, and James Reginald Brereton. He married Violet Beecroft in 1925, and had a child Wesley Brereton. Harry Brereton died at age 70 years old on April 9, 1972 in Golden Square.

Six months after the swearing in, McKinley was shot - and died of the gangrene that set in as a result.
