James Reginald Brereton 1889 - 1961

James Reginald Brereton of Bentleigh, City of Glen Eira County, VIC Australia was born on May 4, 1889 in Malmsbury to William Brereton and Elizabeth Ann (Hughes) Brereton. He had siblings Thomas Edward Brereton, Lottie Louisa (Brereton) Letts, Elizabeth Ann Brereton, William John Hughes Brereton, Beatrice Augusta Brereton, Amelia Sarah Brereton, George James Brereton, Gertrude Elizabeth Brereton, Harry Edgar Brereton, and John Forrest Brereton. He married Annie Eliza (Sheehan) Brereton in 1914, and had children James Edward Brereton and Allen John Brereton. James Brereton died at age 72 years old in August 1961 in Bentleigh.

In 1889, in the year that James Reginald Brereton was born, on May 31st, the South Fork Dam collapsed. Located in western Pennsylvania, the dam failed - sending more than 20 million tons of water into the towns below it. The flood killed more than 2,200 people in and around Johnstown. The newly formed Red Cross responded to the disaster.

In 1903, when he was merely 14 years old, the silent film, The Great Train Robbery opened. Although it was filmed in Milltown, New Jersey, it was a Western. Twelve minutes long, the film used a lot of innovative techniques - some scenes were hand colored and composite editing, on-location shooting, and frequent camera movement were used. Its budget was $150 (about $4000 currently) and was the most popular film until 1915 when Birth of a Nation was released.
