John Forrest Brereton 1907 - 1977

John Forrest Brereton of Heidelberg, City of Banyule County, VIC Australia was born in 1907 in Malmsbury to William Brereton and Elizabeth Ann (Hughes) Brereton. He had siblings Thomas Edward Brereton, Lottie Louisa (Brereton) Letts, Elizabeth Ann Brereton, William John Hughes Brereton, Beatrice Augusta Brereton, Amelia Sarah Brereton, George James Brereton, Gertrude Elizabeth Brereton, Harry Edgar Brereton, and James Reginald Brereton. He married Elizabeth Harvey in 1927, and had a child Kenneth Albert Brereton. John Brereton died at age 69 years old on February 23, 1977 in Heidelberg.

In 1907, in the year that John Forrest Brereton was born, the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.

In 1915, by the time he was just 8 years old, the Superior Court in Fulton County Georgia accepted the charter for the establishment of the new Ku Klux Klan, succeeding the Klan that flourished in the South in the late 1800's. This iteration of the Klan adopted white clothing and used many of the code words from the first Klan, adding cross burnings and mass marches in an attempt to intimidate others.
