6 Memories, Stories & Photos about Helen

Bertha Sositko and Children 1925
Bertha Sositko and Children 1925
Bertha (Zlatykanicz) Sositko and four of her children in order by age: Helen Josephine- age 10, Mary- age 9, Geneva E.- age 7 1/2, and Joseph "Joe" Sositko- age 4 1/2 years old. This was Geneva Sositko's First Communion in the spring in about 1925. The family's church was St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio. Take notice to the girls with their Dutch Boy haircuts.
Bertha was born in 1883 in Muszyna, Poland to Peter and Apolonia (Chmielowska) Zlatykanicz. She married John Sositko in 1908 in Hamilton, Ohio.
Helen married George A. Henry (the son of Lena Tribbey, raised up in Oxford, Ohio and Leroy "Roy" Henry, born in Darrtown, Milford Twp, Butler Co., Ohio) in 1934. Helen married second to Fred W. Cook (George's youngest half brother) in 1946.
Helen talked about her childhood to her daughter, Terry Ann (Cook) Tuttle Bradley. She talked about how she remembers going ice skating with her brothers and sisters on the canal when the canal would freeze over in the winter in Hamilton, Ohio.

Helen Josephine (Sositko) Henry Cook, the daughter of John and Bertha (Zlatykanicz) Sositko, at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Hamilton, Ohio. This photo was taken in either 1922 or 1923. Her birth certificate in Jan. 1915 said she was the daughter of Joseph Sositko and Mary Zlatykanicz but it is incorrect. Probably a mistake from Bertha speaking broken English. There were many mistakes on birth certificates. Census records and church records proves the family members. John's brother, Joseph Sositko and Bertha's sister, Mary Zlatykanicz were not married, The were married to other people and lived in separate states (not Ohio). Also, Helen's birth certificate doesn't have her first name. But her baptismal record does.

Helen J. (Sositko) Henry Cook
Helen J. (Sositko) Henry Cook
Helen Josephine (Sositko) Henry Cook in about 1940 in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio. The daughter of John 'Jan' 'Joannes' and Bronislawa Rosalia "Bertha" (Zlatykanicz) Sositko. The Sositko name also spelled like Susitko and Susidko. Helen was born on January 14, 1915 and baptized January 31, 1915 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Her birth certificate has some incorrect information on it but her baptism record about 2 weeks later has the correct information but with a few misspellings. Helen was married first to George Henry. She married a second time to Fred "Bud" Cook. She had 5 children. Helen died on February 13, 1968.
Helen built airplane parts (wings) during WWII in the early 1940's in Kings Mills or Mason, Ohio. Her son said she worked at an ammunition plant in Kings Mills, Ohio (probably at Peters Cartridge Co/Remington Arms Co) but she also worked with her sister in law, Pauline Sositko on airplanes. Pauline was the riveter and Helen was the bucker. Her daughter, Terry also remembers seeing her mom getting into an airplane in the 1950's from the Butler County Regional Airport (also known as Hogan Field) in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio (near Fairfield Twp). Helen knew shorthand. She was the head cook at Mercy Hospital in Hamilton, Ohio. She always gave herself a hair perm (permanent wave) and always wore lipstick. She would give family members perms. Everyone I talked to said Helen was a very nice person and never said anything bad about anyone. She never said an unkind word about anyone or anything.
All of Helen's ancestors were in Poland, Hungary (now Slovakia) and possibly in Austria and Russia (or Ukraine). All of her ancestors were Catholic.
