Herbert Oakley married Lydia (Black) Oakley in 1909, and died at age 52 years old on October 29, 1917 at Mena House in East Melbourne, Melbourne City County.

    The Argus, Melbourne. 30 October 1917. OAKLEY.- On the 29th October, at Mena House, East Melbourne, Herbert Hill, the dearly loved husband of Lydia Oakley, "Lyndale," Acland street, St. Kilda. The Warracknabeal Herald. 30 October 1917. Word was received in Warracknabeal yesterday that the death had occurred of Mr. Herbert Hill Oakley, a member of the firm of Messrs. Mills and Oakley, solicitors, of Queen street, Melbourne, and brother of Mr. H. W. Oakley, for many years resident in this town. Deceased who was 52 years of age, had been in failing health for some time. He was a man of excellent character, and was very highly respected.

Lasting 13½ hours before burning out, it used a "a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires". He applied for a patent on November 4th, receiving the patent in January 1880.
