Hodgson Brown Rundell was born in 1864 to Joshua Upcott Rundell and Mary Ann Elizabeth (Hodgson-Brown) Rundell, and had siblings Lucy Upcott Rundell and Hodgson Brown Rundell. He was in a relationship with Susan (Ah Yet) Rundell, and had children Rose Elizabeth (Rundell) Vizard, Lucy Louisa (Rundell) Jamieson, Horace Charles Rundell, Elsie Irene (Rundell) Ridley, William Henry Rundell, and Mary (Rundell) Brogmus. Hodgson Rundell died at age 81 years old in 1945.

In 1864, in the year that Hodgson Brown Rundell was born, on February 25th, the first prisoners arrived at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Andersonville became notorious for the conditions that Union prisoners endured. 500 prisoners had left from Richmond, Virginia the week before - eventually 13,000 prisoners would die at the prison.
