In 1848, in the year that James Herod Anderson was born, on February 2nd, the Mexican–American War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Rio Grande River became the border for Texas and California and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming became US territory. Ninety percent of the population in those areas chose to become US citizens.

In 1861, James was just 13 years old when on March 4th, Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States. Winning by a plurality of the popular vote, 39.8% - there were many candidates, Douglas was the strongest - he decisively won the electoral college with 180 votes. He was the first President to emerge from the newly created Republican Party.

In 1876, by the time he was 28 years old, on November 2nd, a giant squid - a little over 20 feet long - washed up on a beach at Thimble Tickle Bay in Newfoundland. It's still a rare occurrence since giant squid live in deep sea at 1000 to 3000 foot depth.

In 1916, at the age of 68 years old, James was alive when in June, the U.S. Congress authorized a plan to expand the armed forces over the next five years. Called the National Defense Act of 1916, the national law expanded the National Guard and Army (the Army added an aviation unit), created the Reserves, and gave the President expanded authority to federalize the National Guard. It also allowed the government to stockpile, in advance, materiel to be used in wartime.

In 1927, in the year of James Herod Anderson's passing, in September, the Columbia Broadcasting System (later called CBS) became the second national radio network in the U.S. The first broadcast was a presentation by the Howard Barlow Orchestra from radio station WOR in Newark, New Jersey.
