  • Obituary

The Woodend Star. Vic. 19th March 1910. DEATH OF MR. JAMES MEMORY. Mr. James Memory, a well-known and respected resident of Upper Macedon, passed away quietly at his residence, " Silver Grove," Upper Macedon, last Saturday afternoon. Mr. Memory, who was over 86 years of age, was a native of Devonshire, England, and landed in Victoria 60 years ago. and spent the greater part of his life on the Mount. He was one of a party who escorted Governor Latrobe, the first Governor of Victoria, on a journey from Melbourne to Sydney, which journey was made in the customary way at that particular time, in a Bullock dray that, needless to add, took a considerable time. Mr. Memory was in the employ of the late Mr. David Syme, who owned the property where Government Cottage now stands. He was also in the employ of the Government for a number of years and assisted in fencing and planting the plantation on top of the Mount known as the Pine forest, which is one of the attractions of Mount Macedon. Mr. Memory was married at Pyalong, Victoria, in 1859, and of the union there were two children, Mrs. Firth and John James Memory, who are both dead. However, Mrs. Memory still survives and is a wonderful old lady, considerably over 70 years of age, who had the pleasure of celebrating her Golden Wedding just about 12 months ago. Mr. Memory was a most unassuming, kind and honest old gentleman and was highly respected by all those who came in contact with him, including the State Governor, who often visited him and named him the "King of the apples " on account of the splendid apples grown by him. The State Governor and Lady Gibson-Carmichael visited him during his illness, as also Mrs. Payne, of Toorak, Mesdames Ryan, Rowan and Ronalds, Misses Thompson, and Messrs. Geoffrey and Oswald Syme and others, who were most kind and attentive to the sufferers wants. Death was due to pneumonia, caused through contracting a severe chill. The deceased was confined to his bed for about a fortnight and the end came peacefully at 4:40 on Sunday afternoon. Dr. Anderson, of Woodend, attended the sufferer and from the first realized that there was no hope of recovery owing to the patient's age. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, and despite the inclement weather, was well attended. The remains were interred in the Macedon cemetery.
