James Richardson Scott of Bairnsdale, East Gippsland Shire County, VIC Australia was born on October 30, 1828 in Launceston, TAS. He was married to Mary Ann Latham Scott in 1856, and had children Helena Ashton (Scott) Cox, William James Scott, George Robert Scott, Charles Alfred Scott, Annie Elizabeth Jarrold Scott, and Roy Francis Scott. James Scott died at age 73 years old on January 17, 1902 in Bairnsdale, VIC.

In 1828, in the year that James Richardson Scott was born, on September 17th, a typhoon - called the Siebold Typhoon because German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold was there and took measurements during the storm - killed over 14,000 people in Kyūshū, Japan. It was the greatest number of deaths in any storm in Japan.

In 1838, at the age of only 10 years old, James was alive when on January 11th in New Jersey, Samuel Morse and two others first publicly demonstrated Morse's new invention - the telegraph. Patented by Morse in 1837, the electrical telegraph used a code developed by him and his assistant, Samuel Vail, and sent a message two miles. In 1844, Morse broadcast from Washington DC to Baltimore Maryland the message "What hath God wrought" and the telegraph took off.
