    The Camperdown Chronicle. Victoria. 13th July 1877. EVANS.- On the 11th inst., Jane Napier, youngest daughter of Edward and Susanna Evans, aged 22 years. The funeral will leave her father's residence, this day (Friday) at 2:30 pm. Sweet child, on whom nature has bestowed Her sweetest gift, the charm of life, 'Tis hard that thou so soon has gone the road To untimed eternity, dear girl, Thou were thy parents' joy, thy sisters' love; To them a balm thy presence gave, Their grief thou calmed'st with thoughts above, Even with thy latest falling breath, But now in death thou liest rigid and cold, A peaceful smile upon thy face, Which to sorrowing friends a tale has told Jesus has taken thee to rest.

In 1855, in the year that Jane Napier Evans was born, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.
