I owe much to Jasper Cockrell
Jasper Cockrell shaped my life.

When I was in high school, I was sent to his office for talking during class.

After he chewed my out, he asked, "What are you going to do when you graduate?"

I said "I have a plan".

He said "You have a plan? This I gotta hear."

I said "I'm going to join the Navy."

He said "That's great. How did you pick the Navy?"

I said "I'm tired of having to walk three miles to go to town and I like to play poker. If I join the Navy, I won't have to walk as much, and I can play all the poker I want."

Jasper looked at me for several seconds to see if I was serious, then said: "That's the stupidest plan I ever heard."

Jasper went to the people who owned our local bank and got them to fund a one-time scholarship for me - enough for one year at a state university. When he awarded it to me, he said "If you do well, you'll be able to borrow enough money to finish college."

And that's what happened.

He changed my life.
