Funeral services for JoAnne Garvey Holder, 72, of Wichita Falls, former Olney resident, were held Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Lunn's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Marie Helm, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Newcastle, officiating. Interment was in the Farmer Cemetery under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home. Mrs. Holder was born March 23, 1930. in Farmer to the late Claude Key and Ollie (Keene) Garvey. She died Saturday, March 30,2002, in a Wichita Falls nursing center. She and Guy Holder were married Dec. 9,1950, in Olney. She received a B.S. from Midwestern State University and an M.S. from Texas Women's University. She taught in the Olney school system for 21 years and taught private art lessons for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newcastle and the Olney Retired Teachers Association. She moved to Wichita Falls in 1998 from Olney. Survivors include her husband, Guy Holder of WichitaFalls; one daughter and son-in-law, Rocki and Bill Holder of Wichita Falls;one brother, Bob Garvey of Farmer; a granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jackey St. John Lowe, Dec. 7, 1997. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be made to the American Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

In 1930, in the year that JoAnne (Garvey) Holder was born, on August 6th, N.Y. Supreme Court Judge Joseph Crater went through papers in his office, destroyed some of them, withdrew all his money from the bank - $5,150, sold his stock, met friends at a restaurant for dinner and disappeared after getting into a taxi (or walking down the street - his friends' testimony later changed). His disappearance was reported to the police on September 3rd - almost a month later. His wife didn't know what happened, his fellow Justices had no idea, and his mistresses (he had several) said that they didn't know. While his disappearance was front page news, his fate was never discovered and after 40 years the case was closed, still without knowing if Crater was dead or alive.
