Jody Lynn Wolfe Murder: Where is Eddie Ricky Nealy Now?
When the police were alerted to the dead body of a teenager in a canal, the city of Fresno, California, was shocked. In 1985, while the authorities tried to work the case, a lack of evidence meant that it hit a standstill. But when a cold case team took another look at the murder and tested for DNA, the advances in technology nailed the suspect. Investigation Discovery’s ‘Swamp Murders: Down the Canal’ chronicles how Jody Lynn Wolfe’s tragic murder was solved more than a decade after her death. So, if you’re curious about how that happened, we’ve got you covered.

How Did Jody Lynn Wolfe Die?

Jody Wolfe was born in March of 1971 in Fresno to Charles and Ramona Wolfe. She was a runaway who took off from home after her mother checked into a drug rehabilitation program. But Jody’s life took a terrible turn a few days after she left home. Jody’s parents had reported her missing about two weeks before she was eventually found. But what the police located was her dead body.

Jody was found floating face-up in a canal in southwest Fresno on August 15, 1985. She was naked except for her high-knee socks. Jody had suffered multiple blows to her head, and the cause of death was precisely that: blunt force trauma; her skull was fractured. The authorities also believed she was sexually assaulted. Genital, oral, and hair samples were collected at the time in hopes of finding the killer.

Who Killed Jody Lynn Wolfe?

However, investigators hit a wall right away. They had no suspect to follow up on, and there wasn’t much evidence to consider. They were also limited by the technology from back then. Over time, the case went cold and remained that way for about two decades. In 2005, Fresno police started looking at cold cases with potential DNA evidence to see if they could close some of them. Soon, Jody’s case had a break. The biological evidence tested from her case led to a match: Eddie Ricky Nealy.

Eddie had a long and violent criminal history. He had two prior rape convictions from 1990. Furthermore, he was linked to the murder of another woman, 28-year-old Mary Charlotte Barnett, whose naked body was found in a field in July 1988. She was manually strangled and had multiple fractures and bruises all over her body. He was charged with the murder in 1991, but the case was dismissed over a year later after a witness didn’t testify.

Then, in September 2001, Eddie raped another woman at knifepoint. He took her with a knife at her throat, dragged her to a field nearby, and sexually assaulted her. The woman was able to fight back and escape. She later picked Eddie out of a lineup. In April 2004, he was arrested on charges of drug possession in Los Angeles, California. So, when the police sought him in relation to Jody’s case, they didn’t have to look very far.

Where is Eddie Ricky Nealy Now?

In September 2013, Eddie, then 56 years old, was convicted of Jody’s rape and first-degree murder. The prosecution stated that Eddie took advantage of the young runaway known to drink and hang out with older men. Eddie claimed to have nothing to do with Jody’s death, saying, “I’ve never been with that child. I don’t know this child,” in a police interview from 2006. Eddie’s lawyers claimed that the sex was consensual. In the end, he was sentenced to death. Jody’s killer was brought to justice close to three decades after her murder. As per prison records, Eddie remains on death row at the San Quentin State Prison in Marin County, California.

Rape trial begins for Fresno man who already faces death sentence
Nearly two years after a jury said Eddie Ricky Nealy should be executed for the 1985 rape and killing of a Fresno teen, a different jury began hearing evidence Monday in Fresno County Superior Court to determine whether he kidnapped, raped and attempted to murder a Riverdale woman in 2001. In September 2013, Nealy, now 58, was convicted of rape and the first-degree murder of Jody Lynn Wolfe, 14, whose nude body was discovered floating face up in a southwest Fresno canal on Aug. 15, 1985. An autopsy revealed she died of blunt-force trauma to the back of her head and had been dead at least two days. During the trial back then, prosecutor Steven Wright told the jury that DNA evidence linked Nealy to Jody’s rape and murder.

Monday, Wright was back in the courtroom, telling a different jury that DNA evidence also links Nealy to the September 2001 kidnap, rape and attempted murder of a woman who was only identified in court as Martha H. The prosecutor said Martha H., then 32, would be dead, too, but she fought back and escaped Nealy’s clutches. Judge Arlan Harrell has put Nealy’s death sentence on hold until after the rape trial of Martha H. In opening statements Monday, jurors weren’t told of Nealy’s conviction in the killing of Wolfe or how he was suspected of killing Mary Charlotte Barnett, whose nude body was discovered in a southwest Fresno field in July 1988. But Wright did tell the jury that Nealy has two prior rape convictions from 1990. According to Wright, Martha H. had left a party in Riverdale during the early hours of Sept. 20, 2001. While walking to her sister’s home, Martha H. was attacked by Nealy, Wright said.

He sneaked up from behind Martha H., grabbed her and put a knife to her throat, Wright told the jury. Nealy then dragged Martha H. to a field and sexually assaulted her behind bales of hay, the prosecutor said. “He violated her over and over and over,” Wright said. Once Nealy was done sexually assaulting her, he wrapped his hands around her neck until she couldn’t breathe. Martha H., however, grabbed some dirt and threw it in Nealy’s face. She fought with him and escaped, Wright told the jury. Naked, Martha H. ran to a nearby mini-market and screamed for help. The owner gave Martha H. a T-shirt and called authorities.

Wright said Martha H. was taken to a hospital and given a sexual assault exam. Semen on her body was later sent to a DNA laboratory for analysis. Testing showed that the DNA from the semen matched Nealy’s DNA profile, Wright told the jury. Nealy’s attorneys, Eric Green and Serita Rios, waived their opening statement until after Wright presents his evidence. When Jody’s body was discovered, Fresno police detectives had few leads. They collected hair samples and swabbed her mouth and genital area. But the case went cold, and the evidence sat in the Fresno Police Department’s property room for more than a decade. Then around 2001, the relatively new crime-fighting tool called DNA testing gave police hope. The evidence was sent to the Department of Justice, and semen from Jody’s body was found on one of the swabs. A few years later, further testing led to a DNA match of Jody’s killer – Nealy, who was in prison on a drug charge when investigators came to talk to him about her murder. In 2007, Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer officially announced at a news conference that Nealy’s DNA linked him to Jody’s murder. Nealy, who has been in the Fresno County Jail since April 2007, was later linked to the alleged kidnap, sexual assault and attempted murder of Martha H.

Fresno man sentenced to death for rape, murder of teen girl
By Pablo Lopez - DECEMBER 04, 2015 03:00 PM, UPDATED MAY 17, 2018 04:27 AM

Eddie Ricky Nealy, whom a prosecutor called one of the most dangerous men in Fresno County’s history, was sentenced Friday to California’s death row for the 1985 rape and killing of Fresno teen Jody Lynn Wolf.

Judge Arlan Harrell’s voice cracked and he nearly cried in Fresno County Superior Court when he announced Nealy’s death sentence.

Nealy, however, remained calm throughout the proceedings. Nealy, 58, received the death penalty after a jury in September 2013 convicted him of rape and the first-degree murder of 14-year-old Jody, whose nude body was discovered floating face up in a southwest Fresno canal on Aug. 15, 1985. The runaway was wearing only knee-high socks. An autopsy revealed she died of blunt-force trauma to the back of her head and had been dead at least two days.

In its decision, the jury said Nealy should be executed for killing Jody.

“It was a cold, vicious murder in the commission of a rape,” Harrell said in announcing Nealy’s punishment.

Weighing in the decision, Harrell said, was Nealy’s penchant to target women and children.

The judge said there was evidence presented at Nealy’s trial that showed he had killed Mary Charlotte Barnett in July 1988, but Nealy never was tried for it.

Barnett’s nude body was found in a southwest Fresno field. She was hogtied and had a purse strap and brassiere tightly wrapped around her neck. The coroner said Barnett died as a result of ligature strangulation and had cuts, bruises and fractures on her face, as well as on other parts of her body.

Nealy was charged with capital murder in August 1991 in connection with Barnett’s killing. But the District Attorney’s Office dismissed the murder case in October 1992 after a key witness either declined to testify or was unavailable, court records say.
