John Brown of Beechworth Australia was born in 1837 to John Brown and Norah Jane (Stewart) Brown. He had siblings Mary Brown, Mary Brown, Ivy Emily Edith Brown, Muriel Catherine Brown, Jessie Ann Brown, Robert John David Brown, Winifred Mary Brown, John Brown, Thomas Brown, John Stephen Brown, and Robert John Davi Brown. John Brown died at age 80 years old in 1917 in Beechworth.

In 1837, in the year that John Brown was born, on March 4th, Martin Van Buren was sworn in as the eighth President of the United States. Van Buren won 50.8% of the popular vote over election rival Harrison's 36.6%, largely due to Van Buren's promise to continue (previous) President Jackson's policies. But Van Buren only served one term because of the Panic of 1837 - which was due to Jackson's economic policy.
