John son of William Gilby and Mary nee Harrison of Swaffham Prior Fen, Cambridgeshire. John married Elizabeth Cray of Soham, Cambridgeshire on the 25 December 1843 in Swaffham Prior. John was a farm labourer working around the Swaffham area. Children of John and Elizabeth were Maryanne born 1844 in Reach. She died aged 2years. Emily born 1845, William 1847, Ann Frances 1850 Mary Elizabeth 1851, Mary Ann born 1854-1855, Mary Ann born 1855 died 1875.

John and Elizabeth decided to leave Cambridgeshire and moved south to Berkshire. To the village of Binfield. Here John 1858 and Sarah 1860 died 1862. Finally Ada was born 1867 in Warfield. They lived finally in Bullbrook, Bracknell, Berkshire. John became a Carter driving the wagons and coaches. He often took one of his children with him when driving around. In 1835 he was gifted a bible. Most of the children's dates of birth were recorded in the bible. It was sent to Australia with Ada Gilby Brooks. One of her daughters, gifted the bible to Arthur's youngest son. He allowed me to copy the writing.
